These tracks are just awesome. This is pure future funk! Lunar bass and Cause N' Effect are classic as could be... lots of goodies on here for sure, its almost endless...
Around '96 through to '98, RAM based their releases on a kind of intergalactic science fiction soundscape, dark and futuristic, they set the tone of underground urban club music. All the track names from around this time have hints towards a journey through space and technology, which I always thought fitted the music perfectly. After this album was released the themes continued, however, the employ of breaks used as beats was generally laid to rest. Some say for the worse, others for the better. This is often the thing that separates old skoolers from nu skoolers, dnb heads from junglists. Personally I find the use of funk and soul breaks on this album, and their contrast with the harsh synth and analogue bass lines, are what give the music it's quality. If you know anything about the production techniques of the time and how hard it was to sample, cut and filter breaks with this much finesse, then you'll appreciate it's merits. This music isn't for everyone, but if you've ever tried to produce a piece of dance music using break beats, then you can fail to marvel at it. After this came a succession of 'Tech Step' releases which I guess was a natural progression for the producers at the time. For me though it'll always be about those breaks. To put things in contrast I'm listening to some Brazilian bossa nova while writing this.
Would definitely also recommend Dope Dragon's 'Wayz Of The Dragon' LP for a similar (albeit slightly jazzier) sci fi / jump up vibe.
Pretty surprised that there's no comments about this already. Torque by ed rush and nico is quite rightly regarded as a seminal drum and bass lp but IMO this is a more dancefloor and dj friendly offering. Highlights include quest remix, cause 'n' effect, recharge and truly one remix. One of the best jungle/drum and bass albums ever made.
The best RAM compilation by far. I know they are the biggest label in d & b but I honestly think that is down to Andy C the DJ & not their output in general. OK I know many will not agree with me but imo there are just sporadicly good tunes from this label & it has totally gone downhill in the last few years but so has d & b in general. Anyways back to this LP, every tune is a stone cold classic that has smashed every dance worldwide a thousand times, they really are that good! Go buy it NOW!!!
I disagree with the assessment of RAM Records. They dominated the 90s especially towards the end. Kinda hit or miss in the early 00s and things have changed for all the labels since, but their 90s output was some of the best. Sound In Motion is one of the best D&B releases ever IMO.
